Toned and athletic: five companions, and what training taught them
Five companions whose frames were built by doing something rather than by standing in front of a mirror. The discipline behind each one shows across a dinner table more than in any photograph: in timing, in patience, in how she threads through a busy bar without breaking stride.

Tennis, and reading the other side
Angelika keeps a court booked early on most Tuesdays, whatever the night before held. The game has taught her to read whoever sits across from her and to wait for the right moment to tease. 172 cm, long black hair, brown eyes, very little make-up. She arrives from seven, usually within the hour, and prefers live music heard close.
Riding, and calm at speed
Laura, 169 cm, green eyes, sun-streaked light brown hair, rides, skis and walks faster than most guests expect. She eases off the moment you ask, which is a rider's instinct. Same-day requests from noon, and her idea of an opening is the spiral staircase of the Monument above Bank and Monument, followed by a late lunch in a quiet courtyard.
Dance, and stillness
Sonya, 162 cm, trained in ballet and now keeps a meditation practice. What it leaves is a calm that settles over a whole table. She collects fragrance, speaks gently, works from five until ten and likes to hear evensong before supper, then walk the river as the far bank lights up.
Pace, and a tailor's eye
Nora, 166 cm, honey blonde, designs clothes and moves quickly through a room, noticing the cut of a jacket before anyone has sat down. She prefers a day's notice and a Shoreditch hotel bar with champagne, and a Saturday night that finishes near the Sunday flower market.
What this view leaves out

The discipline is named because it explains a manner, and because the question most often asked about athletic companions is simply whether she will enjoy a walk across a bridge after dinner.
