Sonya, evensong and an early supper

Stillness is a skill, and Sonya has practised it. She is 162 cm, with the athletic build of a dancer who never quite stopped. Dark brown hair, long and straight as a ballet barre; hazel eyes that take their time. A room goes calmer when she sits down. Her style is understated evening elegance: a dress in navy or charcoal, a fine cashmere wrap, low heels, a scent you notice only when she leans closer to say something.

Calm, thoughtful and warm, she makes a busy day feel as though it has properly ended. She meditates every morning and has trained in ballet for years, which explains the posture and the grace on a staircase. English is her language, spoken gently and with care. She collects fragrance and keeps notes on each bottle, and she can describe a perfume the way a critic describes a symphony. She owns more scent than shoes and is unapologetic about it.

Her early evening in Southwark begins at Southwark Cathedral, beside London Bridge and the market, where choral evensong is sung on many weekdays and visitors are welcome to sit and listen. She finds it the best reset in London. The choir, the stone and the candlelight do the rest. Afterwards comes supper somewhere quiet nearby, an unhurried meal, one glass of wine and a long conversation, and she is always happy to walk along Bankside as the lights come on across the river.
