A Victorian shed, rebuilt around its passengers
The station opened in 1874 and was rebuilt in the late 1980s beneath its restored iron and glass roof. The main concourse is wide and bright, the departure boards run along it, and at the Hope Square entrance a bronze memorial remembers the Kindertransport children who arrived here in 1938 and 1939. Outside, Broadgate's offices and plazas spread north, and Spitalfields Market is five minutes east.
In the evening the commuters leave in waves until about eight, and then the area turns into a hotel district with good restaurants and very little traffic. Bishopsgate stays lit, and the station itself never quite empties.
The station hotel keeps one of the City's odder secrets. Behind a false wall in the old Great Eastern, builders in the 1990s found a Masonic temple of 1912, all marble and gilt, sealed off and forgotten for decades. It is still there, inside the hotel, a few floors from the concourse crowds.

Arrivals, and the people staying near them
Two kinds of guest book here. The first has just arrived: from Stansted after an evening flight, from Cambridge after a day of meetings, from Heathrow on the Elizabeth line with a City hotel reserved. The second is staying nearby for work and chose the location for the trains. Both want an evening that starts soon after the journey ends and runs to a clear timetable. They are usually tired, often hungry, and grateful for someone who makes the first evening in town feel easy rather than organised.

Hotels a short walk from the barriers
Andaz London Liverpool Street is part of the station building, the old Great Eastern Hotel of 1884, its door a few steps from the concourse. Pan Pacific London is five minutes east at One Bishopsgate Plaza. Hart Shoreditch Hotel is about ten minutes north on Shoreditch High Street, and Montcalm Royal London House stands on Finsbury Square to the north west, nearer Moorgate.
We name these because guests stay in them, not because of any arrangement, and there is none. Serviced apartments around Broadgate and Spital Square are welcome on the same terms, with the address and name checked once.

Every line in the building, and her journey
Liverpool Street itself serves the Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines, together with mainline and airport trains, and its hotels are a minute from the exits. Moorgate, five minutes west, adds the Northern line. Aldgate is eight minutes south east.
She travels in by cab. From the West End the route runs through Holborn and along London Wall, and on a weeknight evening it takes around twenty-five minutes. Expect her within the hour after the desk confirms. EC2M is in Zone 1, so there is nothing extra to pay for her journey.
At a station hotel she uses the street door like any other evening guest, never the concourse entrance, and tells the desk as soon as she is inside. You hear at once. Would you sooner meet in the bar before going up? Say so when you book and she heads there instead.

Timing an evening to an airport train
The Stansted Express takes a little under fifty minutes, long enough to settle everything on the way. Write as the train pulls out of the airport with your hotel, a start and a length. Somewhere around Tottenham Hale a reply arrives with her name, the total and an arrival time. Check in, send your full name and the room number, and she follows shortly after.
If you fly out early the next morning, an overnight booking of ten hours at £1,800 can be timed to finish before your train. For a shorter evening ahead of an early start, two hours at £500 ends well before midnight.
