Leather, warehouses and one very good street
Bermondsey Street is the spine of it: a narrow, slightly crooked road of Georgian houses and warehouse fronts running south from the railway arches at London Bridge. The Fashion and Textile Museum stands halfway along, painted in hot pink and orange, and a large contemporary gallery occupies a converted warehouse nearby. Around them the restaurants are small and serious: tapas counters, a French bistro, a wine bar with a proper list.
South of the street, Bermondsey Square holds an antiques market on Friday mornings, and Maltby Street and the Ropewalk fill the railway arches with food traders at weekends. At night the district is residential and calm. It feels much further from the City than it really is.
The old trade is written into the street names. Tanner Street and Leathermarket Street run off the main road, and the Leather Market building of 1833, with its tall arched windows, now holds studios and small workshops. At the southern end, St Mary Magdalen's church and its little green give the street a village pause before the square opens out.

Guests who chose the east side of the bridge
Bermondsey bookings come mostly from people who are here by choice. Residents of the warehouse flats. Visitors in a short-let apartment who wanted a neighbourhood rather than a hotel district. Guests at the one hotel on the square. They know the area, want someone relaxed and good to talk to across a table, and prefer an evening that does not feel like a hotel booking at all. Many of them would describe it simply as dinner in interesting company, and in Bermondsey that is exactly how it looks from the next table.

Bermondsey Square, and the hotels up the road
Bermondsey Square Hotel is the local address, a modern building on the square itself, with the antiques traders setting up below its windows on a Friday. For more choice, the London Bridge hotels are about ten minutes' walk north: London Bridge Hotel on London Bridge Street, Shangri-La The Shard beside the station, and Hilton London Tower Bridge by the river at More London.
These are hotels guests happen to use, not partners of ours, and nothing is arranged with any of them. Plenty of Bermondsey evenings happen at private addresses instead, a loft conversion off Tanner Street or a flat near the Leathermarket, and those are just as welcome. The desk needs the address and the name, confirmed once.

The Jubilee line, and how long she takes
Bermondsey station, on the Jubilee line, is three minutes from the square. London Bridge is six minutes north up Bermondsey Street, with the Northern line and mainline trains. Borough, on the Northern line, is twelve minutes west.
She comes by cab over Tower Bridge or London Bridge, whichever the traffic favours. From central London that is around twenty-five minutes on a clear evening, and the desk gives you an expected arrival when it confirms. Part of Bermondsey carries an SE16 postcode, but all of it lies within Zones 1 and 2, so the journey is already in the fee.
Arriving at a private flat works a little differently from a hotel. She messages the desk once she is outside, you are told she is at the door, and nobody else in the building needs to know anything. If there is an entry phone she uses it; if there is a concierge, she gives your flat number and waits to be buzzed up.

A Bermondsey evening, from start to finish
A resident in a warehouse flat off Bermondsey Street writes at five: the four-hour dinner date, from half past seven. She arrives on the minute. They walk two minutes to a tapas bar, share plates at the counter and try a sherry neither has had before. Afterwards, one more glass on the square, then back to the flat, with the steel windows open to the quiet street. At half past eleven she leaves, and the neighbourhood is already asleep.
