Slim and slender: ten companions, and what each brings along
Ten companions with a long, clean line. Lucy stands 163 cm, Violetta 178, and the other eight fall somewhere between the two. The frame is noted and nothing further is said about it: no comparison, no figures past height. On a riverside walk it mostly shows in the way a coat falls from the shoulder.
Far more telling is what each one brings. Six carry something in a bag that predicts how the evening will unfold. Four carry it somewhere you cannot see.

A camera, twice
Cindy, 168 cm, blonde waves, blue eyes, shoots on film and saves the roll for the hour the marina turns gold. Stacy, 176 cm, near-black hair, shoots after dark with no flash, skaters under the South Bank and reflections on the river, and afterwards asks which frame you would keep. Both are good company on foot, and both would rather walk than sit.
Paper, in three forms
Liana, chestnut and soft-spoken, keeps Colette or Flaubert in a pocket and a small bistro on Bermondsey Street in mind. Patricia, auburn brown, carries a watercolour tin and will press a secondhand book on you that you would never have picked. Vanessa, sandy balayage, keeps a pocket notebook of words she learned this month. All three prefer a table where the conversation can actually be heard over the room.
A grammar book
Samanta, 174 cm, long smooth dark brown hair, reads grammar for pleasure and speaks a very exact English as a result. She dines among the green stone columns of a former banking hall at Bank and likes the plan settled by three in the afternoon, which is exactly what a City business dinner needs.
Nothing in the bag at all
Karolina, 174 cm and black haired, brings a pianist's ear to a Barbican concert and a considered view on the second half. Lucy brings a habit of looking up; on a clear night she will find you a planet over Borough. Margo brings patience in front of a painting, and the longest bookings suit her. Violetta, the tallest at 178 cm, brings a dry line and waits for its moment.
What the bag says about the evening
A camera means walking and a light that has to be caught, so Cindy and Stacy suit two hours or more. Paper means a table and a conversation, so Liana, Patricia and Vanessa lean towards three. A grammar book means a fixed plan. The four who carry nothing visible are the easiest to place anywhere, from a concert hall to a long dinner.
